IN 1807 Napoleon’s forces invaded what is known today as Bolivia. Conflict between who to follow, Ferdinand, his sister, or Spain, led to much distress. In 1809 tensions grew because they anted independence. After a failed attempt to revolt, Pedro Domingo Murilo led another attempt. IN result of this revolt upper Peru (known now as Bolivia) was never ruled by Spain again. In 1825 independence was declared, and upper Peru became the republic of Bolivia. Named after Simon Bolivar. In 1932 the Chaco War began as a result of territory disputes. Bolivia and Paraguay both wanted to expand their territory, to gain access to River Paraguay. The river runs through parts of Bolivia and Paraguay. In 1932 Bolivia tried to get access to the Atlantic Ocean by way of the river. Paraguay heavily armed their borders and fought viciously to defend themselves. More than 100,00 soldiers were lost on both sides. In 1936 Paraguay claimed victory over Bolivia, claiming the River Paraguay and the land around it called Chaco Boreal.
